FAQ

Q. how did POWERHOUSE residency come about?

A. during the pandemic, t’ai’s mission was to buy a home outside the city to serve as a personal writing retreat. as she spent the next year renovating & furnishing the space with the help of family & community, her mission became clear. POWERHOUSE was born out of a desire to create a homespace/ safe space/ creative haven/ artist sanctuary for Folx who may feel excluded (creatively, emotionally, financially, personally) from other artist residencies & retreat spaces.

Q. what makes POWERHOUSE different from other residencies?

A. it’s FREE. it’s merit-based, but also need-based. & need isn’t limited to financials. It’s intentional in its creation. every square foot of space was designed with creatives in mind. it’s FOR US, BY US. it’s inclusive & expansive. our purpose & scope is forward thinking, but always guided by our ever-resourceful ancestors.

Q. i work better collaboratively. can i bring a friend/lover/accountability partner?

A. we welcome residents to share the space with co-collaborators, friends, spouses, partners, etc. just let us know when you apply!

Q. i don’t have a particular project i’m working on right now. is that okay?

A. POWERHOUSE residencies are not contingent upon or tethered to any particular project proposal. we believe that ALL activities(including rest & leisure) are a part of the creative process.

Q. i would like to sponsor a resident’s stay. is that possible?

A. POWERHOUSE is definitely amenable to opening the space to deserving Folx who are nominated & sponsored by patrons. Please CONTACT US for more details on how to make this possible.

Q. what future initiatives are on deck at powerhouse? how will my donation help?

A. we have big dreams for making POWERHOUSE accessible & sustainable. we would like to create ramp accessibility, purchase a washer & dryer, create solar energy infrastructure, purchase a generator, install baseboard or radiant heating, purchase a wood burning stove for basement, waterproof basement, acquire a truck with snow tires for hauls & local travel.

Q. but is it really free? what’s the catch?

A. the weeklong residency valued at $2000 is free to POWERHOUSE residents. to apply, there is a $25 application fee. residents are also responsible for a $250 deposit which is fully refundable upon completion of the stay.
